The Lakes That Shaped Avon Park
A Look at Lake Viola, Lake Tulane, and More

Avon Park’s lakes are more than scenic views, they are the foundation on which the city was built. Long before modern development, these freshwater gems drew settlers, supported daily life, and helped define the city’s unique landscape. Today, they remain central to Avon Park’s identity, both as natural landmarks and as reminders of the area’s earliest days.

Lake Tulane: A Window Into Ancient Florida

Lake Tulane is one of the most fascinating natural features in Avon Park. Known for its remarkable depth and perfectly round shape, it is considered one of Florida’s oldest lakes, estimated to be tens of thousands of years old.

Its geological significance has attracted researchers for generations, with sediment cores providing clues about prehistoric climates and ecosystems. But for locals, Lake Tulane has always been a place for quiet reflection, fishing, and community enjoyment.

Lake Verona: A Gathering Place Since the Beginning

Lake Verona has long served as one of the town’s favorite recreational spots. Early postcards and photographs show swimmers enjoying designated swimming areas, families picnicking along the shoreline, and local events held by the water.

Because of its central location near downtown, Lake Verona became a natural choice for festivals, gatherings, and public celebrations. For many residents, memories of hot summer days spent in its cool water embody the essence of growing up in Avon Park.

Lake Viola: A Hidden Gem With a Local Legacy

Nestled in a more secluded setting, Lake Viola has always felt quieter and more intimate. Historically, it served as a popular fishing location and a peaceful retreat for locals who wanted to escape the busier parts of town.

Old maps and notebooks preserved by the Historical Society show cottages and early homes built near its shoreline, marking it as an early residential favorite. Even today, the area around Lake Viola retains that calm, timeless feeling.

How the Lakes Shaped Early Settlement

When founder Oliver Martin Crosby first encouraged northern families to relocate to this new Florida settlement, the area’s lakes were a major selling point. Their beauty and abundance made Avon Park ideal for fishing, farming, and recreation.

Lakes provided:

  • Reliable freshwater sources

  • Natural cooling and breezes

  • Prime spots for early agriculture

  • Places for swimming, boating, and community events

As the town grew, homes and businesses clustered around these natural features, giving Avon Park a distinctive layout still visible today.

A Legacy That Endures

Even as development has expanded, the lakes remain central to daily life. From sunrise reflections to weekend fishing trips, they continue to offer beauty, recreation, and a link to the town’s origins.

For the Avon Park Historical Society, these lakes represent more than photographs or records—they are living landmarks that shaped the city’s culture and continue to define its charm.
