Accessibility Statement

The Society wants everyone to be able to use this site, and this is how it is built to be.

What we aim for

The site is built to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) at level AA. Some of that is design, and some of it is enforced: the site will not build if a rule is broken.

  • No text is smaller than 16 pixels.
  • Every link and button is at least 44 by 44 pixels, so it can be used with a finger or a shaky hand.
  • Every colour combination meets the AA contrast standard, measured, not guessed.
  • Menus open on a click or a keypress, never on a hover, and close with Escape.
  • The menu works without JavaScript.
  • Animation is switched off for anyone whose device asks for reduced motion.
  • Every photograph must have a written description before the site will build.
  • A “skip to content” link is the first thing on every page for keyboard and screen-reader users.
  • Every page is checked at six screen widths, from a small phone to a wide monitor, on every change.

What still needs work

  • Some photographs in the community album have descriptions copied from their captions and are waiting for a fuller description.
  • The donation, membership and ticket forms, and the video player, are provided by other companies and are outside the Society’s control.
  • The dining-car menu is a PDF and may not be fully readable by a screen reader.
  • Ask A.P.’s answers are generated text. They cite the archive pages they are drawn from, and those pages are the reliable version.

Tell us

If something on this site is hard to use, please say so through the contact details on the About Us page. It helps to include the address of the page, what you were trying to do, and the browser or assistive technology you were using. A volunteer will reply.

Ask the archive

    Try asking:

    0 / 500

A.P. answers only from the Society's own archive and cites what it used. Questions are not linked to you; search history is stored on your device only (how it works).Ask a volunteer for anything it cannot answer.
