Avon Park population in the 1935 Florida State Census
The town history The First Hundred Years of Avon Park, Florida (1976) prints a table of population growth under the heading “U.S. Census” which gives the 1935 population of Avon Park as 4,667.[first-hundred-years-p99] Because the federal census is conducted only in decennial years, this figure cannot be a U.S. Census count.
The State of Florida conducted its own mid-decade census in 1935. The Sixth Census of the State of Florida, 1935 enumerated Highlands County by precinct and municipality. The enumeration recorded the incorporated city of Avon Park with a population of 3,423 (2,481 white, 942 Black), and the adjacent unincorporated precinct of Avon Park Lakes with a population of 1,249 (793 white, 456 Black).[byrne-2020-population]
The town history’s figure of 4,667 is therefore factually incorrect as a municipal total and misattributed as a federal count. It appears to be an unofficial combination of the Avon Park city limit count and the adjacent Avon Park Lakes precinct (which together total 4,672), published without geographic distinction or correct attribution to the state enumeration.
