The Avon Park Air Force Range is outside the Avon Park city limits
Despite sharing the name of the municipality, the Avon Park Air Force Range (APAFR) is entirely separate from the incorporated city limits of Avon Park, Florida.
The installation is situated approximately 10.5 miles (16.8 km) southeast of the city of Avon Park. It spans more than 106,000 acres across Polk, Highlands, and Okeechobee counties.[wiki-apafr] In contrast, the City of Avon Park itself is located in northwestern Highlands County and encompasses a total area of 8.2 square miles.[census-2020-avon-park]
This geographic distinction has existed since the military facility’s inception in 1942 as the Avon Park General Bombing and Gunnery Range. The active military range, along with its associated formerly used defense sites (FUDS) east of the Kissimmee River, sits well beyond the municipal boundaries.
