Avon Park Army Airfield is not listed on the National Register
The Avon Park Army Airfield (now the Avon Park Air Force Range) is frequently claimed to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places, notably in the Museum of Florida History’s World War II site inventories.[mfh-airfield]
This claim is incorrect. An exhaustive search of the National Register database for Highlands, Polk, and Okeechobee counties confirms that the military installation itself has never been listed. The confusion arises from the fact that several associated civilian structures in the City of Avon Park that supported the airfield during the war—such as the Pine Crest Lakes Club, the Hotel Jacaranda, and the Seaboard Air Line Railroad Station—are indeed on the National Register. The active military airfield itself is not.
