Avon Park Civic League and Lake Denton Development Company, 1915

Civic work in town

In its Avon Park department of 4 February 1915, The De Soto County News reported that the ladies’ Civic League had met in the council room on 29 January. The paper said the league assisted improvements to sidewalks and streets, credited it with many improvements about town, and stated that it met in the council room every two weeks.[dsc-1915-02-04-civic-denton]

The department’s notice of 25 February announced another Civic League meeting in the council room at 3 p.m. on 25 February.[dsc-1915-02-25-civic] These notices identify an organized women’s civic group working through the municipal meeting space. They do not name individual league officers or members.[dsc-1915-02-04-civic-denton][dsc-1915-02-25-civic]

Lake Denton land promotion

The same 4 February department named Lester Windsor, J. H. Ross, R. I. Harris, and H. W. Snell as officers of the newly incorporated Lake Denton Development Company.[dsc-1915-02-04-civic-denton] The notice gives no titles for the individual officers and does not identify the company’s acreage, plat, or incorporation date.[dsc-1915-02-04-civic-denton]

A county-paper item on 18 March reported that “R. I. Harris & Company” entertained the public at Lake Denton, served a Florida fish dinner, and sold a number of lots to people in the area.[dsc-1915-03-18-denton] Taken with the February officer notice, this connects Harris’s firm to a 1915 Lake Denton land-sale event, but does not establish whether it was the same legal entity as the Lake Denton Development Company.[dsc-1915-02-04-civic-denton][dsc-1915-03-18-denton]
