The Avon Park Historical Society’s “Founding Exhibit” Text
The Avon Park Historical Society’s website historically featured a “Founding” exhibit page that subsequently became a dead link. The text was recovered via the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine from an August 2018 capture.[aphs-founding-exhibit]
The exhibit page contained the following text:
This exhibit depicts the early beginning of the town of Avon Park. Period furnishings and displays from Oliver Crosby’s Florida Developement Office and personal effects from William and Mary King, the first permanent English settlers. Mr. King was the manager of the new settlement.[aphs-founding-exhibit]
This confirms the Society’s institutional stance that William King served as the manager of the new settlement, and that William and Mary King were the first permanent English settlers. A related image asset titled “King Story” was also identified in the archive but is omitted due to copyright restrictions.
