Avon Park in the historic Black press

Because no local Highlands County newspapers prior to the 1930s have been digitized, and because the town’s local histories often omitted its Black residents, the national African American press serves as a vital external record. A systematic survey reveals several distinct threads of coverage for Avon Park, establishing a documented presence that the local record lacks.

Early appearances

Avon Park was visible to Black readers nationally during its pioneer and early boom eras. Search queries using the Library of Congress Chronicling America index for historic African American newspapers return matches for Avon Park in The Kansas State Ledger (Topeka, Kansas) on 9 August 1895, and The Gazette (Cleveland, Ohio) on 17 July 1909 and 4 August 1917.[loc-api-black-press]

Baseball and the Negro Leagues

While the St. Louis Cardinals’ spring training camp in Avon Park (1927–1929) is well documented locally, the town’s role in Florida’s broader baseball circuit is corroborated by the national Black press. The Baltimore Afro-American covered baseball schedules involving teams and exhibition games in Florida, with its archives recording Avon Park schedules and references to players participating there in the Negro Leagues or winter leagues.[baltimore-afro-american]

World War II aviation

The Pittsburgh Courier, one of the most prominent Black newspapers of the mid-twentieth century, covered African American soldiers during World War II in detail. Its reporting establishes that the 858th Aviation Battalion underwent basic training at Avon Park, connecting Black military personnel directly to the town’s wartime aviation infrastructure.[pittsburgh-courier-858th]

Additionally, the Chicago Defender is referenced in academic literature (specifically the Florida Historical Quarterly) alongside historical accounts of Florida regarding civilian pilot training schools operating in Avon Park and Lakeland during the 1940s.[defender-pilot-training] The Baltimore Afro-American is similarly cited by researchers documenting the impact of wartime experiments and civil rights events in Florida communities like Avon Park.[baltimore-afro-american]
