Pioneer Private Banking, the Bank of Avon Park, and the B. F. West Enterprise

Before the establishment of chartered national banks on the Lake Wales Ridge during the 1910s railroad era, Avon Park’s financial credit, deposit banking, and exchange services passed through two distinct private banking phases[redwood-1894-10-18][gaz-1895][gaz-1907].

The First Phase: The 1894 Bank of Avon Park

In late September or early October 1894, town founder Oliver Marvin Crosby and Minnesota banker Charles C. Chollar established the Bank of Avon Park as an unincorporated private banking institution capitalized at $20,000[redwood-1894-10-18][gaz-1895]:

  • Location: The bank opened in temporary quarters within the executive offices of the Florida Development Company inside the Hotel Verona, while a dedicated bank building on Main Street was under construction[redwood-1894-10-18].
  • First Customer: Pioneer resident James R. Skuse was recorded as the institution’s first depositor[redwood-1894-10-18].
  • Demise: The catastrophic freezes of December 1894 and February 1895 halted town expansion and bank capital formation. When the Florida Development Company defaulted and its assets were seized under sheriff’s execution in 1896–1897, the unchartered institution ceased operations without completing its planned permanent quarters[gaz-1895][gaz-1907].

The Second Phase: B. F. West & Son Mercantile Banking (1895–1918)

Following the collapse of Crosby’s corporate ventures, commercial banking in Avon Park transitioned to a storekeeper-banking model operated by English-born pioneer merchants Benjamin Francis West (1847–1926) and his son Ellis Robert West (1877–1957)[dsc-1905-1915][lof-1913-6662]:

  • Store Acquisition: In late 1895, the West family acquired the East Main Street store building previously operated by postmaster Dorr D. Kinney, establishing the general merchandise firm B. F. West & Son[dsc-1905-1915].
  • Directory Listings & Typographical Clarification: In the 1907 and 1911 state directories, the firm is listed as “R. F. West & Son, general store and bankers,” operating the town’s sole “private bank”[gaz-1907][gaz-1911]. Primary county records and municipal incorporation rolls confirm that “R. F. West” was a directory typographical error for Benjamin F. West & Son, managed by Ellis R. West[dsc-1905-1915][lof-1913-6662].
  • Functions: The West private bank accepted cash deposits from growers and settlers, cashed northern drafts, provided mercantile credit, and handled freight remittances connected to team haulage from the Fort Meade railhead[dsc-1905-1915].
  • Evolution: By 1918, the business was formally designated in commercial directories as B. F. West & Co., Bankers, coexisting alongside the newly chartered First National Bank of Avon Park established by the Skipper family and C. E. Lanier[gaz-1918].

The West private banking enterprise served as the financial bridge between the frontier development schemes of the 1890s and the modern banking system of the 1920s land boom[dsc-1905-1915][gaz-1918].
