Documented material and social interactions between Brighton Seminoles and Highlands County, 1930s-1940s
Although the foundation of the Seminole cattle program at the Brighton Reservation in the 1930s did not rely on stock or pasture from neighboring Highlands County, there is documentation of routine material and social interaction between the Brighton community and the adjacent towns of Sebring and Avon Park during this era.
Social and cultural visits
Sebring, as the seat of Highlands County, served as a regional center and site of interaction for Seminole families and local residents. An undated mid-twentieth-century photograph from the State Archives of Florida documents older Seminole and Mikasuki men, including Billy Bowlegs, in Sebring alongside Albert DeVane of Lake Placid, a recognized local authority on Seminole history.[floridamemory-bd042]
During the same period, federal documentation efforts captured parallel cultural life in both locations. In 1940, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) Federal Writers’ Project made field recordings of folklore and singing at both the Brighton Seminole Indian Reservation and in Sebring, reflecting the shared regional focus of New Deal cultural programs.[floridamemory-wpa-sebring]
Material trade and local supply
Archaeological and historic preservation records confirm the movement of manufactured goods from Highlands County onto the reservation. A 1944 “hobble-skirt” Coca-Cola bottle recovered at the Brighton Reservation was manufactured in Avon Park, demonstrating that everyday consumer goods from the ridge towns flowed into the Seminole community.[thpo-coca-cola-bottle] In the other direction, the Brighton Shell Pit—a major extractive operation on the reservation—supplied shell material for road construction projects in surrounding municipalities, including Avon Park.
