Consulting the Seminole Tribe before public interpretation

Any public interpretation of Seminole history must be developed in consultation with the Seminole Tribe of Florida. The Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum and the Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) exist to respect, celebrate, and preserve Seminole culture and history as the Seminole people tell it.[ahtahthiki-about]

The THPO works to support accurate storytelling, promote the decolonization of history, and ensure that research projects maintain cultural authority. Research involving Tribal land, interviewing Tribal members, or accessing sensitive Tribal collections requires a formal research permit issued by the THPO. Even for off-reservation fieldwork and public interpretation, consultation is strongly encouraged to respect Indigenous Data Sovereignty and the agency of the Seminole people.[thpo-research-policy]

Outsider bias in primary sources

Historically, accounts concerning the Seminole people—particularly regarding the Seminole Wars, treaties, and government reports—were authored by United States military officers, government officials, or non-Indigenous observers. These reports often served to justify military actions or federal Indian policy, resulting in an imbalance in the historical record that lacks the Seminole perspective. There is frequently no corresponding Seminole report to balance the official government or military narrative.[fhq-outsider-bias]

Late nineteenth-century publications, such as Minnie Moore-Willson’s 1896 book The Seminoles of Florida, are examples of outsider documentation that reflected the paternalism of the era rather than a self-determined Seminole narrative.[moore-willson-1896] Because nearly every primary source used in early local histories was written by outsiders about Seminole people rather than by Seminole people about themselves, interpretation must be guided by the Seminole Tribe’s own historians.
