Distinguishing the two Florida Homeseeker publications
Historical literature and regional newspaper reprints contain references to two separate promotional publications bearing the name Florida Homeseeker (or Florida Home Seeker). Because both periodicals marketed Florida lands to northern settlers and shared similar titles, citations to “the Homeseeker” are easily confused unless distinguished by their publisher, geographic focus, and dates of publication.
1. Crosby’s The Florida Homeseeker (Avon Park, c. 1890–1895)
The original publication connected to Avon Park was established by Oliver Marvin Crosby and his Florida Development Company around 1890, initially published at the Fort Meade railhead before Crosby moved its editorial and printing base to Avon Park in 1892.[pineapple][fa-1893-11-08]
- Geographic Focus: The interior Lake Wales Ridge, south Polk County, and northern DeSoto County.
- Publisher & Editor: Oliver M. Crosby, with offices at Avon Park, Florida.
- Editorial Policy: Crosby framed Avon Park as a strict temperance colony, publishing stringent moral standards for incoming settlers (“Do not come to Avon Park if you must have strong drink… Do not come to sober up, or reform!”) and marketing $25-an-acre lands to middle-class northern homeseekers and English settlers.[wpa-1939]
- Circulation & Demise: The paper claimed a distribution of approximately 10,000 copies across the Northeast and Great Britain, but ceased regular publication following the Great Freeze of 1894–1895 and the financial collapse of the Florida Development Company.
2. The Florida East Coast Homeseeker (St. Augustine & Miami, 1899–1913)
The second and more widely distributed publication was The Florida East Coast Homeseeker (frequently shortened in contemporary newspaper citations and reprints to The Florida Homeseeker), established in 1899 as an official organ of the Flagler railway system.[star-1900-03-23][ufdc-fech]
- Geographic Focus: The Atlantic coastal strip opened by Henry M. Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway, spanning Brevard, Volusia, Palm Beach, Broward, and Dade counties south to Miami and the Florida Keys.
- Publisher & Management: Published by the Model Land Company (the land subsidiary of the Florida East Coast Railway), under corporate officers including Vice President James E. Ingraham, and edited for many years by agricultural booster Ethan V. Blackman.[ufdc-fech]
- Format & Scope: Issued as a monthly illustrated promotional magazine containing regional crop reports, railroad schedules, soil descriptions, and real estate offerings.
- Contemporaneous Confusion: In March 1900, The Florida Star of Titusville reprinted an article headed “California vs. Florida Fruit” credited “From the Florida Homeseeker.”[star-1900-03-23] While its opening arguments on winter temperature and frost vulnerability resembled Crosby’s earlier ridge promotional writing, the body focused explicitly on “the southern portion of Brevard and the whole of Dade county” as “the tropics of the United States.” This reprint derived entirely from Flagler’s East Coast organ and has no connection to Avon Park or the Lake Wales Ridge.

3. The Florida home-seeker of Hampton (1895)
A third paper of nearly the same name has since been digitized and is easily mistaken for either of the other two. The Florida home-seeker published at Hampton, in Bradford County in north Florida, was edited by P. W. Corr and survives for February and April 1895. It has no connection with Avon Park, with Crosby, or with the Model Land Company, and a citation to a “Florida home-seeker” of 1895 should be checked against its place of publication before it is used.[ufdc-hampton-home-seeker]
