The Authorship and Existence of 'Florida: Its Advantages and Drawbacks'

The Phantom Third Book

Oliver M. Crosby’s 1888 promotional pamphlet Common Sense About Florida contained a reference to another work “describing Florida in general, and Avon Park in particular,” purportedly titled Florida: Its Advantages and Drawbacks. Later historiographical reviews questioned whether this represented a third distinct published book by the Avon Park founder, alongside his known works Florida Facts Both Bright and Blue (1887) and The State of Maryland and Its Advantages for Immigrants.

Exhaustive searches of the Library of Congress catalog, the HathiTrust Digital Library, the Internet Archive, and Google Scholar yielded no record of a standalone publication by Crosby bearing this exact title.

Historiographical Resolution

The phrasing “Its Advantages and Drawbacks” was a ubiquitous subtitle convention in late-nineteenth-century immigration and promotional literature, deployed to project an aura of objective balance to prospective Northern settlers. The reference in the 1888 pamphlet is assessed as either a loose description of an ephemeral unindexed circular produced by his Florida Development Company, a working title for an unpublished manuscript (such as his later Avon Park’s History, 1885 to 1896 held by the P.K. Yonge Library of Florida History), or a generic descriptive phrase misconstrued by later researchers as a formal title.

Consequently, the existence of a third published bound book by Crosby titled Florida: Its Advantages and Drawbacks is rejected as a phantom citation.
