Florida Railroad Commission regulation of Avon Park depots

The Florida Railroad Commission (later the Florida Public Service Commission), established in 1887, was the state regulatory body overseeing transportation and utility services throughout Florida, including in Avon Park.

While the Commission regulated the rail lines, freight rates, and schedules, it did not own or operate the local train stations. Avon Park was served by two primary historical depots owned by competing railroad companies:

  1. Atlantic Coast Line (ACL) Railroad Depot: Built in 1912. This station provided critical rail service for freight (including citrus and produce) and passengers.
  2. Seaboard Air Line (SAL) Railway Depot: Built in 1924. A Mediterranean Revival-style building that served as a secondary rail hub in the city.

The Commission’s annual reports contain specific regulatory actions regarding these facilities, such as addressing station complaints (e.g., lack of depot toilets) or specific rate applications for freight on these lines. However, the full text of the Commission’s annual reports [frc-annual-reports] for the 1917–1923 and 1927–1933 periods cannot be programmatically harvested and require manual review of digitized volumes held by the HathiTrust Digital Library and the Florida State Archives.
