Construction of the Florida Western and Northern Railroad (1924-1925)
The Florida Western and Northern Railroad (FW&N) was chartered in April 1924 as a subsidiary of the Seaboard Air Line (SAL) Railroad. Championed by Seaboard president S. Davies Warfield, the line was rapidly constructed during the Florida land boom to connect the Seaboard network from Coleman, Florida, southeast through Avon Park, terminating in West Palm Beach.
This 204-mile extension was a strategic maneuver by the Seaboard Air Line to break the Florida East Coast Railway’s dominance in South Florida. News of the project circulated widely in the national press in May 1924, including coverage in the Evening star in Washington, D.C., and The Montgomery advertiser in Alabama [loc-sn83045462] [loc-sn84020645].
The Florida Western and Northern railroad reached Polk City on January 24, 1925 on its maiden run to West Palm Beach, with the final spike for the railroad driven on January 21, 1925. In Avon Park, this line necessitated the construction of the Mediterranean Revival-style Seaboard Air Line Railway Depot, which established Avon Park as a crucial secondary hub in the region. North of Avon Park, the boomtime Spanish-style depot at Polk City was also constructed with a red tile roof and stucco walls [florida-memory-155895]. The Interstate Commerce Commission later generated valuation maps for the entirety of the Florida Western and Northern route, including its passage through Highlands County [nara-1257351].
