DeSoto County Commissioner John Hagan Sr. and the Hagan Naval Stores Co.
A hypothesis was raised that John Hagan Sr. of Charlotte Harbor, a prominent DeSoto County Commissioner in the late 1910s and early 1920s, was the owner behind the Hagan Naval Stores Co. operating at Avon Park. This connection is ruled out by historical records.
The similarity in surname, county, and era led to the initial inquiry, but exhaustive searches confirm there is no direct link. John Hagan Sr. was heavily involved in the politics and infrastructure of the region, notably serving as an Assessor of Taxes and advocating for the construction of the first bridge across Charlotte Harbor (completed in 1921). Upon the creation of Charlotte County from DeSoto County in 1921, he was appointed to serve in the newly formed government by Governor Cary A. Hardee.[florida-memory-charlotte-harbor-sketch] There are no records linking him to the title “Superintendent of the County Farm” or to any naval stores operation in Avon Park.
The Avon Park naval stores industry during this era was dominated instead by the Consolidated Naval Stores Company. Furthermore, while the Ona Naval Stores Company operated in Ona (also in DeSoto County), and a Hagan Naval Stores Co. is listed in a 1918 gazetteer under Avon Park, there is no evidence connecting John Hagan Sr. to this enterprise.
