Inventory of the Avon Park Depot Museum Collections
The Avon Park Depot Museum, operated by the Historical Society of Avon Park, is housed in the historic 1926 Seaboard Air Line Railroad station on North Museum Avenue. Through a synthesis of museum directories and tourism guides, the following permanent collections and archives are held at the museum:
1. Railroad and Depot Artifacts
- The 1926 Mediterranean Revival Seaboard Air Line depot building itself.
- Original depot artifacts, including ticket windows, the agent’s desk, vintage luggage racks, and station signage.
- Historic locomotive and railcar components: authentic wheels, couplings, and bells from Seaboard Air Line equipment.
- A 1948 California Zephyr dining car, added to the museum in 1986, which is used for luncheons.
- A restored caboose located on the museum grounds.
- Detailed model train layouts.
2. Photographic and Document Archives
- A photographic archive consisting of “hundreds of old photos” documenting early settlement, everyday life, and the evolution of regional rail travel.
- Historic newspapers, including hard copies and microfilm of The Avon Park Sun.
- Educational archives, including Avon Park High School annuals and Walker Academy school annuals.
- Scrapbooks, ledgers, and original memorabilia.
3. World War II and Military History
- A dedicated Memorial Room containing uniforms, photographs, and scrapbooks related to local veterans and World War II activities in Avon Park.
- Artifacts and videos related to the Lodwick Aviation Military Academy and the Avon Park Bombing Range.
4. Pioneer Domestic Life
- Fully furnished room displays from the 1910s–1930s era, featuring a period-appropriate kitchen, bedroom, and parlor with authentic furniture, cookware, and textiles.
5. Agriculture, Citrus, and Cattle Ranching
- Tools of the regional trade, including cattle brands, chaps, citrus pruning shears, and crates, representing the citrus and cattle industries that defined the local economy.
- Large-scale agricultural equipment.
6. Indigenous Heritage
- A collection of Native American artifacts, including Seminole pottery and tools, acknowledging the region’s original inhabitants.
7. Avon Park Baseball History
- A recently developed room featuring exhibits detailing Avon Park’s 100-year history of baseball, including its era as a Major League spring training site.
8. Local Industry and Technology
- The last manual switchboard used by a telephone company in the State of Florida.
- Artifacts detailing the invention of “Brown ’n Serve” rolls in Avon Park.
Excluded Claims
A claim in museumsdatabase.com that the museum is housed in a depot “built in 1885 by the South Florida Railroad” is erroneous and has been rejected. The South Florida Railroad never reached Avon Park, and the current museum building is the 1924–1926 Seaboard Air Line depot.
