Pabor Lake Pineapple masthead, October 1892
The masthead of the first issue of the Pabor Lake Pineapple, Vol. 1 No. 1, October 1892: an engraved pineapple plant beside the title, the subtitle “Devoted to the development of the pineapple and other tropical fruits in south Florida,” and the dateline “Pabor Lake, Avon Park, DeSoto County, Florida.”
The dateline is itself evidence: in 1892 Pabor Lake was named as a place distinct from, but paired with, Avon Park, and DeSoto County was still the county of record — Highlands County was not created until 1921.
