Compiled List of Research Asks for the Avon Park Historical Society
As research into Avon Park’s history progresses, several open questions require access to the physical archives and local collections held by the Avon Park Historical Society at the Depot Museum. The following inquiries compile the current gaps that cannot be resolved via digital repositories:
- Vertical Files: Does the Society maintain a finding aid or index for its vertical files, and are these files available for researcher browsing?
- Pre-1912 Photographs: Does the archive hold the original prints or glass negatives for key pre-1912 photographs, such as the 1888 ox-team sawmill machinery transfer to Lake Brentwood, the 1894 Hotel Verona Thanksgiving gathering, and the 1912 Atlantic Coast Line station?
- Fenton 1956: Is there a reference copy of Horace J. Fenton’s History of Avon Park, Florida, 1886-1956 (Vantage Press, 1958) available to view in the museum? This work is out-of-print and generally held only in rare book rooms.
- Maxwell 1986: Does the Society have a copy of the revised 1986 edition of Leoma Bradshaw Maxwell’s The First Hundred Years of Avon Park, Florida (originally published in 1976) that can be consulted to review differences from the first edition?
- 1964 Diamond Jubilee Booklet: Can researchers access the complete 1964 Avon Park Diamond Jubilee booklet, which notably includes a history of the Avon Park Correctional Institution written by its staff?
- Darsey’s 1937 Avon Park Guide: Does the Society hold a surviving physical copy of Darsey’s 1937 Avon Park Guide?
- Black History Exhibit Research: What primary sources and oral history transcripts were utilized to construct the 2026 Permanent Black History Exhibit (particularly regarding Officer Fred Conner and the Hopewell School), and are those underlying records accessible?
- Written Permission Terms for Photograph Reuse: What is the Society’s formal policy and fee structure, if any, for obtaining written permission to reprint and publish historical photographs from the archive’s collection? Update 19 Sept 2026: A preliminary review of the Society’s website terms confirms they do not publish an automated online permission or licensing system. Researchers must contact the organization directly via phone ((863) 453-3525), email (avonparkdepotmuseum@gmail.com), or mail (3 North Museum Ave, Avon Park, FL 33825) to request a formal signed agreement for high-resolution copies and to determine specific administrative handling fees and copyright status for individual items.
