Common Sense about Florida, 1888

The full 26-page scan of O. M. Crosby’s promotional pamphlet, the earliest publication found so far that names Avon Park in print. Its full title is Common Sense about Florida and information regarding Lake Forest and Avon Park, model south Florida enterprises, with a chapter of Florida drawbacks, published in New York by the South Publishing Company, with Crosby named as General Manager at 99 Franklin Street.

The copy digitized is the Florida State Library’s, stamped on the title page and carrying the accession number 34801.

What is in it

An address “To the interested but suspicious reader,” which opens by admitting that Florida land promotion had earned its bad name; a frontispiece plate of a lake through pines; descriptions of Lake Forest and Avon Park as going concerns; and, unusually for the genre, a chapter on Florida’s drawbacks. The references page names C. H. Mallory & Co., ex-Governor J. L. Chamberlain, Hamilton Disston, and three Florida banks.
