Pre-1930 Highlands County newspapers are largely undigitized, but the Pabor Lake Pineapple is not

This is infrastructure knowledge. Any researcher planning to search early Avon Park history in digitized newspapers should read it before spending time.

What is not there

Chronicling America, the Library of Congress newspaper archive, has digitized exactly two DeSoto County titles: The De Soto County News of Arcadia and The Champion of Arcadia. The catalogue dates them 1898–1924 and 1895–1911, but the digitized runs are much thinner than the catalogue dates suggest: for the De Soto County News, issues survive online for 1905, 1906, 1915 and 1916 only, with nothing between 1907 and 1914 or after 1916. It holds no pages from any newspaper published in Avon Park, Sebring, Lake Placid, or Bartow, and no pages tagged to Highlands County at all. The Highlands County News of Sebring, 1927–1959, exists there as a catalogue record explicitly marked as not digitized.[loc-chronam-desoto]

The University of Florida’s Highlands County holdings skew modern: The News-Sun from November 1988, and the Highlands News-Sun from May 2016.[ufdc-holdings]

The practical effect is that a keyword search for a person or event in Avon Park between the town’s founding and roughly 1930 will usually return nothing, and that silence means very little.

What is there

The exception matters. The University of Florida has digitized the Pabor Lake Pineapple, published at Pabor Lake in Avon Park, DeSoto County, in the 1890s — the right place, in the right decade, when almost nothing else survives in searchable form.[ufdc-pabor-lake-pineapple] For the founding generation of Avon Park it may be the single most valuable digitized newspaper in existence, and it does not appear to have been read systematically.

Note two search quirks. Chronicling America’s full-text search on the current www.loc.gov endpoint combines multiple terms with AND, not OR, so a search narrows rather than widens as terms are added; quote each phrase, and facet by title to search a single paper. (The legacy chroniclingamerica.loc.gov domain now refuses automated requests outright.) The University of Florida’s collections run as a JavaScript application, so automated tools that fetch plain pages get an empty shell and a real browser is required.[loc-chronam-desoto][ufdc-holdings]

The local archive holdings

While national and state online repositories leave the 1920s largely blank, the Avon Park Historical Society’s local collections bridge this gap for Avon Park. The Society preserves and has digitized over 900 issues from the 1919–1930 decade alone:

  • The Highlands Pilot (1919–1925): 231 digitized issues spanning 28 November 1919 through 4 July 1925, providing continuous weekly reporting through the county-formation vote, land boom development, and municipal expansion.[aphs-pilot-run]
  • Highlands County Messenger (1921–1923): 54 digitized issues from 6 August 1921 to 26 May 1923, documenting the bitter political controversies of the newly formed county.[aphs-messenger-run]
  • Avon Park Times (1928–1942): 626 issues, including 134 issues from 1928 to 1930, recording the peak and collapse of the land boom, municipal bond defaults, and the Great Depression.[aphs-times-run]

Consequently, while online searches in Chronicling America or the Florida Digital Newspaper Library will fail to reflect 1920s Avon Park, the town’s local newspaper record is extensively documented in the Society’s own holdings.

Sanborn fire insurance maps exist for Avon Park only for November 1920, February 1926, and February 1939 — no earlier edition was made, so the town’s first three decades are not covered by that source either.[loc-sanborn-avon-park]
