Charles H. Walker

Charles H. (“Charlie”) Walker (died October 1947) was a prominent Central Florida citrus executive, commercial leader, and civic benefactor in Avon Park.[maxwell-1976][levey-2016] As president of the Ridge Area Hospital Association in 1947, he spearheaded the successful community campaign to establish Avon Park’s first general hospital, which was dedicated in his memory as Walker Memorial Hospital following his sudden death at the conclusion of the drive.[fenton-1958][levey-2016][adventhealth-75]

Citrus leadership and banking

Walker was a prominent figure in the development of Florida’s commercial citrus industry in Highlands and Polk counties:

  • Avon Park Citrus Growers Association: Served as longtime president of the local association, directing grower interests and local packing facilities.[levey-2016]
  • Florida Citrus Exchange: Held executive leadership roles including president of the statewide Florida Citrus Exchange, helping shape marketing agreements and cooperative grower policies during the 1930s.[levey-2016]
  • Avon Florida Citrus Corporation: Following the financial collapse of the Anderson brothers’ extensive citrus holdings (the Pittsburgh-Florida Citrus Growers Association and Lake Byrd Packing Company), Walker was appointed receiver for the bankrupt corporations. He successfully reorganized their operations under the Avon Florida Citrus Corporation, maintaining grove production and packing operations through the Great Depression until their subsequent acquisition by the Sottile Brothers in the 1950s.[maxwell-1976]
  • Barnett National Bank of Avon Park: In 1930, Walker was named an original director on the founding board of the Barnett National Bank in Avon Park, serving alongside J. N. Greening, W. T. Coates, M. V. Pilcher, W. A. Marschall, and S. J. Pendleton.[stlouis-fed-1930]

The hospital campaign and memorial legacy

In early 1947, when representatives of the Seventh-day Adventist Church negotiated to acquire the vacant wartime Lodwick Aviation Military Academy barracks at the Highlands Lakes Hotel and Casino on Lake Lillian, the federal government required the community to raise $150,000 in matching funds by October 1947 for remodeling and equipment.[levey-2016][adventhealth-75]

Walker took charge of the newly organized Ridge Area Hospital Association to conduct the campaign.[fenton-1958][levey-2016] He marshaled support across the Ridge, securing major financial pledges from local growers, commercial enterprises, and civic organizations.[maxwell-1976][levey-2016] With approximately $50,000 remaining before the federal deadline, Walker personally secured the balance, guaranteeing that Avon Park would receive the facility.[maxwell-1976][levey-2016]

Just days after achieving the financial goal, Walker suffered a sudden fatal heart attack in October 1947.[fenton-1958][levey-2016] The hospital board and the Adventist Church named the new institution the Walker Memorial Sanitarium and Hospital in his honor.[maxwell-1976][levey-2016] The facility was formally dedicated on January 6, 1948, with United States Senator Claude Pepper giving the main address.[adventhealth-75]

In addition to the hospital—which operated on Lake Lillian until 1997 before relocating to Sebring as AdventHealth Sebring—Walker’s name continues in the adjacent Seventh-day Adventist school, Walker Memorial Academy, established near the original hospital site.[maxwell-1976][levey-2016]
