William Krause (1840–1915)
William Krause was a German-born early Avon Park resident whose work joined public office, household fuel, and the town’s first ice-making venture. The town’s newspaper reported his death on Saturday, 30 January 1915, at age seventy-four. It said he had been born in Germany in 1840, reached Avon Park from New York in 1888, pursued several local enterprises, and was buried in Avon Park Cemetery after a funeral conducted by the Rev. Benjamin Stock.[dsc-1915-02-04]
Settler and deputy sheriff
Krause arrived in Avon Park by 1888 from New York with his family.[dsc-1915-02-04] Leoma Bradshaw Maxwell separately listed Charles Krause as an early German-born settler who assisted surveyor H. H. Penrose, while recording William and his wife among early community members.[maxwell-1976] A September 1905 county-paper report calls him “Deputy Sheriff William Krause” while describing his investigation of illegal game killing near Lake Jackson, a few miles south of Avon Park. The report says he followed fresh wagon tracks, encountered an armed sentry, and concluded that some people involved might use violence to avoid detection.[dsc-1905-09-29]
Business and civic memory
Krause and his son advertised stove wood in the county paper during 1905.[dsc-1905-09-29] That September, the Avon Park column reported that the pair had ordered machinery to complete an ice-making plant and expected local ice production early in October.[dsc-1905-09-08] Maxwell also named William Krause among the sources who supplied the early school-teacher chronology later verified with William King for a 1919 historical sketch read at the brick school’s dedication.[maxwell-1976]
The 1915 obituary describes his surviving family as a wife, five sons, and two daughters, among sixteen children.[dsc-1915-02-04]
