A Novel Railway in South Florida
G. W. Breck’s drawing of the Avon Park Transportation Company’s wooden-railed tramway, printed across the lower half of page 567 of Harper’s Weekly for 15 June 1895, illustrating the article “A Novelty Among Railroads” on page 557.
Six men stand with the twelve-ton Lima Shay locomotive on a track of wooden rails laid through open pine woods, one of them at the throttle in the cab and another on the tender. The rails are squared timber, not iron, and the roadbed is bare sand — the detail that made the line worth a national magazine’s attention.
