Avon Park’s own history writing is silent on Indigenous presence

Every account of the town’s history located in this research begins with European settlement and says nothing about what came before.

The Historical Society’s own article on the lakes that shaped Avon Park discusses Lake Tulane’s scientific importance, notes that researchers study its sediment cores for information about prehistoric conditions, and then moves to postcards, cottages, fishing and Oliver Marvin Crosby’s promotion of the lakes to northern settlers. It never connects any lake to human presence before settlement.[aphs-lakes] The Chamber of Commerce history begins at Crosby’s arrival in 1884.[apccfl-history] Popular local histories do the same.

The pattern extends to official designation. None of the properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Highlands County is an archaeological site; all are buildings, districts, a depot, and a cemetery.[nrhp-highlands] Even the state wildlife agency’s own history page for the Lake Wales Ridge gives the entire precontact period a single sentence before moving on to citrus, turpentine and the railroad.[fwc-ridge-history]

Why this matters. The silence is not evidence that nobody was here. People lived on this ridge for thousands of years, and the archaeological documentation exists — it simply sits in state and federal record systems that local history writing has never drawn on. A visitor to the museum currently learns that Avon Park’s story starts in 1885. It starts several thousand years earlier.

What to do about it. This is a correctable gap, and correcting it does not require new excavation. It requires requesting existing records: the Florida Master Site File for Highlands County, the cultural resource surveys held by Avon Park Air Force Range, and the published archaeology of the Belle Glade culture. A single interpretive panel built from those sources would close most of it.
