Edgar A. Pabor
Edgar A. Pabor was a Florida journalist, notary public, and horticultural manager who served as the co-editor and business director of the Pabor Lake Pineapple from 1892 to 1897.[pineapple] Alongside his father William E. Pabor, he documented the agricultural economy, transportation initiatives, and social life of the early Lake Wales Ridge settlement during the formative decade of pioneer colonization.[pineapple]
Early Life and Editorial Work
Edgar A. Pabor was the son of colony founder and horticultural poet William E. Pabor and Mary Pabor. He relocated to Central Florida in 1892 during the establishment of the Pabor Lake settlement north of Avon Park.[pineapple]
When the family launched the Pabor Lake Pineapple in October 1892, Edgar Pabor served as co-editor, managing subscriptions, local correspondence, advertising, and legal notices.[pineapple] The monthly journal provided critical documentation of regional events, including the arrival of John C. Burleigh’s Shay locomotive, the construction of the Avon Park Transportation Company’s wooden tramway, and detailed records of regional pineapple and citrus acreages.[pineapple]
Civic and Business Activities
In the 1895 Florida Railroad Gazetteer and State Business Directory, Edgar A. Pabor was listed as the official Notary Public for Pabor Lake, executing affidavits, land conveyances, and commercial contracts for the local population.[gaz-1895] He operated alongside his father (postmaster and colony manager), brother W. H. Pabor (carpenter), and mother Mrs. W. E. Pabor (proprietor of the Welcome Inn).[gaz-1895]
Following the cessation of regular publication of the Pineapple in late 1897 and the post office closure in 1900, the Pabor family transitioned their operations into commercial grove care.[fa-1909-12-01] Under the business name W. E. Pabor & Sons, Edgar and his family managed citrus groves, pomelo plantations, and winter properties for absentee northern investors and winter residents through 1910.[fa-1909-12-01] His brother Charles W. Pabor subsequently became a prominent general contractor in Avon Park, constructing City Hall in 1928–1929.
