Harvey and Clarke
Harvey and Clarke was one of the most prominent and prolific architectural partnerships in South Florida during the 1920s Florida land boom.[wiki-harvey-clarke] Founded in West Palm Beach in 1921 by architects Henry Stephen Harvey (1888–1968) and Louis Phillips Clarke (1882–1959), the firm designed numerous civic, commercial, educational, and transit landmarks across Florida, including the 1925 Seaboard Air Line Railway passenger and freight station in Avon Park (now the Avon Park Depot Museum).[nrhp-90000486][wiki-harvey-clarke]
Principals and Firm History
- Henry Stephen Harvey (1888–1968): Born in England, Harvey studied architecture in Europe and New York before establishing practice in South Florida in the 1910s. He specialized in Mediterranean Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival styles, adapting classic Spanish and Italian motifs to Florida’s subtropical climate.[wiki-harvey-clarke]
- Louis Phillips Clarke (1882–1959): Co-founder and business partner who managed firm contracts, structural engineering collaborations, and major commercial development commissions.[wiki-harvey-clarke]
- Gustav Maass (1894–1983): Prominent architect who served as chief draftsman and associate with Harvey and Clarke in the mid-1920s before establishing his own acclaimed practice in the Palm Beaches.[wiki-harvey-clarke]
At its peak in 1924–1926, Harvey and Clarke maintained South Florida’s largest architectural office, employing more than fifty architects, draftsmen, and specification writers in West Palm Beach.[wiki-harvey-clarke]
The Seaboard Air Line Commission (1924–1925)
In April 1924, S. Davies Warfield, President of the Seaboard Air Line Railway, organized the Florida Western and Northern Railroad (FW&N) to construct a 204-mile passenger and freight corridor connecting Coleman, Florida to West Palm Beach.[wiki-fwn]
Warfield engaged Harvey and Clarke to create a comprehensive architectural program for the railroad’s passenger depots, express facilities, and related infrastructure across the new system:[wiki-harvey-clarke][wiki-fwn]
- Standardized Mediterranean Revival Idiom: Harvey and Clarke developed a cohesive corporate identity using Spanish Eclectic and Mediterranean Revival motifs:
- Textured stucco over hollow clay structural tile.
- Red Spanish barrel-tile hipped and gable roof lines.
- Prominent round-arched doorways and multi-light window arcades.
- Decorative twisted Solomonic/spiral columns flanking principal portals.
- Deep trackside bracketed eaves and covered passenger canopies.
- Depot Network: The firm designed stations along the central ridge and lower east coast lines, including depots at Avon Park, Sebring, Okeechobee, Indiantown, West Palm Beach, Delray Beach, Deerfield Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, and the west coast extensions at Naples and Fort Myers.[wiki-harvey-clarke][wiki-fwn]
- The Seminole Inn: In addition to railroad depots, Warfield commissioned Henry Stephen Harvey to design the historic Seminole Inn (1926) in Indiantown as the headquarters resort for the Seaboard’s southern operations.[wiki-harvey-clarke]
The Avon Park Station (1925)
Harvey and Clarke’s design for the Avon Park Seaboard Air Line station at 3 North Museum Avenue represents a quintessential example of the firm’s mid-scale Mediterranean Revival transit architecture:[nrhp-90000486][riches-depots]
- Structure: Built of load-bearing hollow clay tile with an exterior stucco finish on a poured concrete foundation.
- Passenger Block: Centered on a hip-roofed passenger pavilion with round-arched entryways, spiral concrete dividing columns, an offset masonry chimney with a corbeled cap, and original dual waiting-room facilities separated by a central ticket and telegraph office.
- Freight Wing: A long rectangular parapeted freight block extending north, featuring raised wooden cargo doors, trackside loading docks, and heavy bracketed exterior awnings.
- Inauguration: The station was placed in service for through passenger traffic on 25 January 1925 upon the inaugural run of Warfield’s Orange Blossom Special through Avon Park.[wiki-fwn]
The station survived post-war railway consolidation, was deeded to local historical preservationists in January 1979, and serves as the Avon Park Depot Museum, designated as a contributing structure in the Avon Park Historic District (NRIS #90000486).[nrhp-90000486]
