J. A. Caldwell
J. A. Caldwell (died spring 1931) was a Florida industrialist, citrus crate manufacturing executive, and banker who directed the operations of Avon Park’s two primary crate mills—the Mutual Crate Company and the Avon Manufacturing Company—from at least 1922 until his death in 1931[ocala-banner-1922][brooksville-1931]. Under his unified management, the Avon Park mill complex developed into one of the largest industrial employers on the Lake Wales Ridge, manufacturing up to 2,500,000 packing boxes annually for Florida’s citrus and vegetable shipping industries[ocala-banner-1922].
Industrial Origins in Wauchula (1918–1921)
Before consolidating his industrial work in Avon Park, Caldwell operated in Wauchula in neighboring DeSoto (later Hardee) County. In February 1918, national architectural and trade journals recorded that Caldwell was organizing a $500,000 corporation in Wauchula to construct a modern factory with an annual production capacity of 4,000,000 crates designed for Florida produce growers[american-architect-1918].
Around 1920–1921, Caldwell moved his family and operations to Avon Park to manage the newly organized crate mills established beside the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad tracks. The family preserved ties to Wauchula, returning in January 1922 to have their infant child christened at the Wauchula Presbyterian Church[fl-advocate-1922].
Management of the Avon Park Crate Mills (1922–1931)
By August 1922, Caldwell served as the unified General Manager of both the Mutual Crate Company (chartered in April 1919) and the Avon Manufacturing Company (chartered in September 1919)[ocala-banner-1922]. In an August 1922 report on the town’s industrial prospects, Caldwell announced that both plants were gearing up for the harvest season:
“Preliminaries are being cleared away now for the opening of the big crate mills here — the Mutual Crate Company and the Avon Manufacturing Company — within the next twenty days, according to J. A. Caldwell, general manager for both. They probably will open Monday week. The two mills are being turned up to produce two and a half million crates, which will bring into Avon Park more than a half million dollars within the next ten months.”[ocala-banner-1922]
The mills formed the financial core of Avon Park’s wage economy, sustaining monthly payrolls of approximately $12,000 at Mutual Crate and $20,000 at Avon Manufacturing[tampa-tribune-1924]. In addition to executive management, Caldwell was elected to the corporate Board of Directors of the Mutual Crate Company at its annual meeting in June 1924, serving as a resident Avon Park director alongside civic leader C. E. Lanier, state senator J. J. Parrish of Titusville, and A. G. Smith of Wauchula[tampa-tribune-1924].
The two operations were run in close coordination with regional citrus cooperatives; half of Avon Manufacturing was held by the Highlands Crate Company of Bartow, itself directed by the board of the Polk County Sub-Exchange of the Florida Citrus Exchange. Caldwell oversaw the complex of forty-four company-owned employee residences and the two-story boarding house in the mill quarter south of Main Street.
Banking Leadership and Death (1929–1931)
In May 1929, Caldwell expanded his civic and financial leadership when local investors organized the People’s Bank of Avon Park to provide commercial banking facilities in the wake of boom-era bank failures, selecting Caldwell as its founding President[cf-chronicle-1929].
Caldwell continued to manage the crate mills until his death in the spring of 1931. In June 1931, the board of directors of the Polk County Sub-Exchange met at Bartow to elect his successor, naming his longtime assistant and office manager William H. Yates as general manager of both the Highlands Crate Company and Avon Manufacturing Company[brooksville-1931].
